Genre: Strategy From Sega Classification: M (Moderate battle violence) Site: www.totalwar.com
THE LATEST in the best-selling and award winning Total War series is set in the years 1080-1530, a turbulent period in European history, just after William the Conqueror took control. Once again, this is a solid and deep strategy game, absorbing in its portrayal of history over important technological centuries spanning events like the discovery of the New World, the European acquisition of gunpowder, and the Mongol invasion from the East. Monstrous cinematic battles involving thousands of soldiers, stunning graphics with crisp sound and music add to the immersive experience as you manage your empire, control your stately diplomatic affairs and command your varying units and armies, doing whatever you can to improve your economy. There is never enough gold in your coffers, so just as in real life, you have to shuffle your resources and micro-manage your trading to get the resources you need for survival and crucial upgrades. This is a period when religion played a key role in affairs and you have to manage that as well, but if it’s a Catholic nation, a papal election can lead to additional tension in the community. Gameplay controls are easy; however, you should concentrate on strategically out-manoeuvring to outwit your enemies in campaigns that will last hours with up to eight players. A grand addition to anyone’s strategy collection.
