With Automatic Updates turned on in Windows XP (SP2) I keep getting messages to download and install updates. When I download them they won't install. I get a friendly message telling me they haven't installed and then a short while later another friendly message telling me that updates are ready for my computer.

Have you tried doing a manual update? There could be something stuck and doing a manual update may get your automatic updates going again.
